Growing onions for show

Hi Protea - I normally put my propagator on the windowsill and turn it so the seedlings don't twist about looking for the light. It's always worked out all right for me but so far I've only used it for flower and runner bean seeds. There's an idea for someone to make - a rechargable propagator

I think you can buy the exhibition onions as plants......quite an expensive way, but does do away with that critical sowing period!.

Probably not as self satisfying as growing them from seed though

This is what i normally do with all seeds i germinate in the prop, just turn the trays/pots round regularly.

A rechargable prop would be nice! (or my landlady could install a powerpoint outside, along with an outside tap - that would be REALLY useful )

Don't bother with the mat Martini. It's easy. You want a steel tray (with no holes) some sand & a parafin lamp stood on something that you can vary the height of (to regulate the temp) ....oh and a propagaing thermometer (about �3 from the local Garden centre) Like this



If it's too cold move the heater up, too warm move it down. Just remember to keep the sand damp as the water will transfer the heat not the sand.
