  • Lifting and Storing carrots

I have a good crop of carrots how do I store these for later use?

I remember reading something about storing in damp sand, in layers....

Can anyone else shed any light on this?

I remember something about earth in boxes, not sure exactly the details. You could try making a clamp. We have grown Autumn King this year and I am reliably informed that you can actually leave these in the ground, which is what I shall be doing as the ones left are from a late sowing. Earlier sowings did not yield much and these have been eaten.

Hi Gordon and welcome to the grapevine! We left our carrots in the ground last year and they were great.

Hello Gordon and welcome to the Vine. I didn't know what to do with mine last year (Nante) so earthed them up a bit and left them in the ground until I needed them. They were fine.

Hello Gordon and welcome to the Vine! as you can probably tell we are a happy, friendly bunch who have lots of useful advice and tips on all things relating to GYO! I know someone will be able to answer your question, not me though! I only had a couple of rows of carrots - and have eaten them all! Delish! dexterdog

The farmers round here leave the carrots in the ground and cover them with straw.
Some years ago I tried storing my carrots in boxes of sand, they went all floppy and started growing again.

If you lift them I wouldn't store them in soil as you don't know what pests there are. Damp sand is best as it can be steralised.

THey should be OK in the ground you can always cover with fleece as that will let air & light in & keep frost out. depending on the variety of course.
