  • Different Potato Varieties - advice please

Hello - got a question for you......

I have got five each of the following varieties of potatoes, all in different stages of "chittedness"

    Jersey Royals
    Vivaldi
    Pink Fir Apple
    Charlotte
    Rocket

If I plant them all at the same time, will they all grow at the same rate so be ready for harvesting together?

They are all going in the same bed, so should all get the same sun and conditions etc.

I would rather have staggered harvesting, so if they are going to grow at the same rate, then I will stagger the planting, starting with the chittiest first.

    Thanks all!
    Never say never!

rocket is a first early as is jersey royal i believe. vivaldi is a second early, charlotte is an early salad type and pink fir apple are a late salad and are ready late november time. sobung them all in together and you should get afairly well spread harvest. not a lot is gained by staggering planting as they tend to grow to type. they are actually growiing whilst chitting. to delay growth you must delay chitting ie keep seed cool @dark.

Yes plant them all at the same time and they will mature at different times giving you a staggered harvest.

I always grow charlottes, which I find very easy to chit, but the most difficult to stop chitting and hold back. So if they are ready and the weather and ground are suitable get them in. I prefer to take a risk by planting rather than get long thin chits and a reduced crop. My Xmas grown spuds are above the potato bags (dangerous time) and with luck should be ready in about 6 weeks.
