Should my Broad Beans have germinated yet ? I planted them in November, hoping they would start in early spring, but nothing yet. Could the cold weather have killed them off, or am I just being impatient (as usual !!) Variety is Aquadulchy, or something like that. Any advice greatly appreciated.

They should have been up by now! It sounds as if the seed has rotted or the birds or mice have had them. Just to check...........have a fertle in the soil, just in case!My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

oh no, mine aren't up either! I planted around 20 of them in November. I did notice a few scratching marks in the soil the day after planting, but nothing since. I have no idea what variety they were, a kind elderly gent in my allotment gave them to me, and he had absolutely loads of broad beans last year so I wouldn't question the seeds being bad.

To avoid squirrels etc getting at the seeds, I sow mine in November in individual 3" pots and then overwinter them in a cold greenhouse. I've planted them out now and they are about 6" tall.

I always grow autumn sown broadbeans which I sow straight into the ground in November. I also plant a few extra in pots that are used to fill any gaps in the rows. Looking back at my records it would seem that, on average, the beans are showing above ground by mid to late december and those that are in pots are put out in early January.
This winter, which has been much colder than recent winters, The beans did not show above ground until mid January and I still have not planted any that are in the pots. Might do that today if it stays dry
If you have nothing showing above ground yet I would think that, unfortunately, you have lost the crop. However don't worry to much. At best Autumn sown broadbeans only crop about a month in advance of a spring sown crop so you still have plenty of time to get some new ones in and have a fantastic crop of lovely fresh broadies. It is the doom of man, that they forget.

Funnily enough, i went out to check on my BB which were planted out late (decemberish) 3 to a large pot and covered with bubble wrap. I now have two young sproutlings, i was dead chuffed as i thought i was too late and would lose them to water/frost/stupidity and general lack of knowlege.
I wouldnt give up hope yet tho

I planted my BB seeds into modules in early Feb. They are just about germinating! Peas however were up within a week.

I've a few BB plants doing very well in a box (under a fleece) - is it possible to leave them to grow on in the box or should I plant them out? The box is about a foot deep, I'm not sure how much depth they need for their roots. My hopes are not always realized but I always hope (Ovid)
