Tricotyledons ?

Forgive the crummy focus! This Black Beauty aubergine seedling has an extra seed leaf. I've done a bit of googling (they can't touch you for it!) and someone reckons it occurs in 1 in every 43 seedlings. So why haven't I seen it before? I've sown MILLIONS in my time. Well, thousands!

The suggestion is that three and even four leaf seedlings occur when 2 seeds are fused together - which makes a bit of sense. However, the person posting this also said that these seedlings tend to be weaker. No sign of this here (yet). He also said that using these to cross in his plant breeding gave rise to one in 13, so it's passed on. Not much use if they're weaker though.

Anyway - has anyone else got one?

I am sure one of my Roma tomato seedlings did that and I thought it odd but took no further notice. However, the chooks trashed my tomato seedlings (yes they got into the house) so I have no way to check now

It doesn't look weaker to me. You definately have to grow it on to see what happens.

I've never seen one either, but then maybe I don't take that much interest in my seedlings as you do

Ooh, I've never seen that before either! Be intersting to see how it grows compared to the others. If it's 2 seeds fused together, do you think there'll be extras in the true leaves too?

oh how weird, i have an early long purple aubergine with 3 leaves too, i just went out to check (just to make sure i didn't imagine it the other day, mine looks fine too

Must be an aubergine thing as one of my De Barbentane has 3 seeds leaves also.

Anyone feel a weird aubergine thread coming on?

The thing I googled mentioned sunflowers and daturas - some other things I can't remember. From our experience on here it does seem to be an aubergine speciality doesn't it? Shall we report back when they get their true leaves - and further?

I've got it on a pepper this year. No piccies, as the police are back round in 5 minutes, but will post one later.

I've never seen one before either..perhaps it's a good summer omen???
