I was forced to put some in as they'd well and truly chitted, three weeks ago I think it was. They've already been earthed up once and will soon need doing again! They're protected in a large bag (outside the ceramic pot). Hopefully they'll be ok, but I've got plenty more to go!! Second earlies went in a week ago, but no sign of shootage, yet. They aren't protected, though and are a bit of an experiment.

Have you got them in enough light? If the shoots are sturdy get them in the ground would be my advice.

I planted 3 buckets of Red Duke of York last weekend. I can protect them from frost so they'll be fine.

My potatoes were delivered in mid December and nothing has stopped them from sprouting. First earlies are going in this weekend as shoots are 2" or more. Seconds will go in week after. Fortunately I have a lot of fleece from a bargain buy last year so I can cover the lot in case we have any more frosts.

Maybe I will put a few in buckets in the greenhouse, purely for experiment purposes too

Definitely worth trying a few in buckets in the greenhouse Jane to get a nice early crop. These Cherie and Charlotte were lifted on 7th May.

Put mine in last weekend - 5 Jersey Royals in the greenhouse border, and 5 each of charlotte, vivaldi, pink fir apple and rocket outside but under clear, perforated polythene.

Mind you I'm way down south and the local farmers have had their Jersey Royals in for weeks, also under polythene, so if anything I am on the late side!

                  Best wishes

My first earlies are chitting away to their hearts content. Don't plan to plant them yet as feel its still a bit cold for them - see what the weather has in store in a few weeks time.

                        Thanks Alice

I did some in buckets for xmas, unfortunately I forgot to fleece them one night and they got 'got' by frost. I left them in the buckets til the other day.. emptied out the compost on the beds and found they were actually still growing, just no tops. Weird. But I'd already tipped them out then

If you've room in a green house or cold frame, you'll be ok.As the polar bears are still here I'll wait for about another 3 weeks

I'm waiting till Good Friday to plant mine, they're chitting away nicely Might start some in buckets in the conservatory (supermarket sprouted ones) if I can get the energy together to get some compost sorted out!

Anyone else trying Mayan Gold? They are supposed to be second earlies, but are chitting frantically way ahead of the International Kidney, or Mimi, or Anya...
                                cheers
