I'm in a bit of a flap!! I planted some broad beans into toilet roll tubes a few weekends ago, as per instructions in my gardening mag. No leaves have appeared yet but from the bottom of each pot is a root approx 1 inch long. Now I'm guessing that this root is after food and water etc, so I'm assuming that the pots should be placed in the ground ASAP, is this the way to go??

I think they will be OK for a few weeks yet. The leaves will poke through any day given the root growth you've seen (it means that germination has taken place). I'd at least wait for the leaves to show before planting out. But even if you do plant them out now, they will most likely be fine. Broad beans are tough and the big seed gives the growing plant plenty of food to get good growth started.

You may have planted them a bit deep so it's taking the leaves a while to get to the surface. Beans usually curl up and I'm guessing you'll see surface disruption any day. Planted mine just over a week ago and they're coming through a treat - special thanks to Flum for the heritage ones she sent me, almost 100% germination on them already.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Mine are doing the same Alison. Exciting sowing big seeds. My crimson flowered came from Muckdiva last year so they are genuine grapevine beans.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Hi there adjohnson, welcome to the vine. I think that you may have planted them a little deep but not to worry, if they are rooting, then they will pop through soon, just be patient lol......mine did the same last year, so expect leaves in a couple of weeks ,Dont worry about tomorrow, live for today

Sometimes, the seed leaves, or cotyledons, remain below the surface of the soil, as in germination of a Pea, below.
So nothing to worry aboutLast edited by piskieinboots; 27-02-2009, 05:21 PM.aka

They were aquadulce cluadia. I bought the seeds last october with every intention of sowing them last november, but I took on a major decorating project( sorry the wife got me doing!!!) which took up about 6 weekends leading up to christmas. I'm trying to work out how the seeds would be too deep as I sowed them to the reccomemnded 2 inches????
