Seeds germinate within days if conditions are perfect (warm and moist).
I sowed mine into paper pots yesterday and popped them in the heated propagator because it's turned really cold with this horrible north wind.

in your opinion will they have failed if they don't come up after that time, or should I just wait for a bit.
as a newbie, my confidence in sowing is low. i'm never sure if i'm caring for the seeds in the right way

If some have come up, that's good.

You very rarely get 100% germination from any type of seed....Plants produce many seeds in the hope that a percentage of them germinate....It's often not the gardener but the seed, the storage, the compost etc etc. If you factor in some seeds that don't germinate, then you'll feel less of a failure and more in tune with nature.

I agree, I've learnt to sow more than I need and then if some don't come up, I'm not left short. Mine came up in about a week too but not all of mine have come up yet and may not but I'm going to hang on a little longer just in case some are a bit slower.

For example....squash and cucurbit seeds...when I spent an afternoon packing seeds for HSL - we threw away any without a fat middle...if they are thin they haven't developed properly - so they are disposed of before being send out to members. They are often blown away when the seeds are cleaned but if one gets through the net they need removing.

thanks for the votes of confidence!
I know that's the case, but as they're new i thought i'd get more than 50% come up, so i'll just wait for a bit
I was rather generous and gave away more than I should have done of my sweetcorn! so I might wander onto seedswap later!
i was thinking i wanted around 9 sweetcorn plants, but now I have just 4 coming up

i rather over-generously gave the rest of mine away to a friend!

now i need more quickly so that i have enough to pollinate!!
if i get a different variety to my Earlibird will i have trouble with that??
