I have small holes drilled into the metal of the greenhouse frame which I put strings through to support the vine. So long as you support in enough places then it works well and stops the fruit getting dirty (and trod on) on the floor. I have had problems with melons weighing the vines down but have solved this by building them little net hammocks (apparently you can use old bras too).

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

How succesful will I be with cucumbers outside in summer - or is this not a possibility? I do have one wall that is very sunny, if I was to put in a large pot against that wall would I be in with a chance?

I am also growing marketmore outside for the first time this year. No greenhouse so has to be the outdoor option. Will probably start them off indooors about six weeks before planting out at the end of May.

Mini-cucumber variety RESTINA... a must for outdoors!

RESTINA is the best outdoor variety I have grown. Its an all-female flower F1 hybrid, very cheap at 47p for 30 seeds from the Lidl food store. It is a very robust plant.

On my patio, where I have grown the plants in pots for the last 2 years, yields have averaged 3.5 to 4.5 Kilos per plant or up to 60 mini cucumbers per plant from June to October with the right cultivation conditions. I train them vertically up bamboos, strings etc to conserve space. Fruit are crisp & suculent, gorgeous for fresh salads, and found they will keep for a week in the fridge. The advantage of mini cucs is that there is no waste left over, no cucumber halves left to go soft in the fridge. Alternatively you can pickle this cucumber but I have never used it as a gherkin.

                  Hello sewer rat,

I hope you are still an active member of this forum so that this can get to you. I am a quilter and was looking for a picture of a cucumber plant for a particular project, and came across yours, which would be ideal for what I want to do. I am contacting you to get permission to use the picture or part thereof. Is that possible? I would very much appreciate hearing from you.
