My 2 year old is pretty keen to plant things. I let her sprinkle the seeds into the compost for planting, or one by one for the peas. We were at the allotment today and she was very happy to take the trowel (her "shovel") and dig around, looking for worms. Filling a bucket with dirt is also good for at least 10 minutes of fun. Our neighbour on the allotment has a small decorative dinosaur that my daughter borrowed (with permission) and had a great time feeding rocks to it.

Once spring starts, I'm sure she will take again an active interest in eating anything I can get off of the plot. Last year, at 18 months, she was already an expert at finding and plucking ripe strawberries. I was impressed at her figuring out the red ones were much nicer than the whitish-green ones. Strawberries, blackberries, cherry tomatoes and mange-touts were the big hits last year, with carrots being the winner later in the year.
