They may disintegrate in your washing machine - could end up expensive. What about washing them in a bucket with some sort of none-tainting bleach? It's my first year growing potaoes and IF I get enough to warrent storing them I plan to do it in big brown paper flour sacks - of which I have access to an inexhaustable supply - as I work in a bakery. Any bakeries in your area?

Dunno about hessian sacks, but I would imagine that if they are left to dry out completely and given a good shaking whilst turned inside out, they would be okay - if you were really concerned you could fill a barrel with mild disinfectant and water, leave them to soak then hang them out to dry - might get some funney looks from the neighbours though !
I use paper potato sacks - for storing potatoes initially and then the used ones get used for carrots, parsnips, celeriac, swedes, milan turnips or any other root crop. When they get too tatty I burn them.
I store mine in stacking trays between sheet of newspaper. I find it easier to keep checking for ones that are going mouldy. I have space in the garage for them so volume not a problem.
