  • Leeks and Onions

Hi, im growing onions and leeks from seed and would like to know how big the individual plants have to be before i can transfer them from the tray to a bigger pot, or to the plot?

I already have onion sets in, but thought i'd have a go from seed aswell.

    thanks

    Hi Lurch,

I grew leeks from seed for the first time last year, I sewed two or three seeds per module, and once they'd germinated I thinned out the weakest one from each. I let them grow on until they were about pencil thickness and then separated them and put them out in the plot to fend for themselves.

Hope that helps a bit - I've only grow onions from sets so far, so can't help there I'm afraid.

Becki this may be a numpty question but were the leeks ok in modules till you planted them out or did you transfer to pots first?

They were bigger than average modules to be fair (at a guess 6 or 7 cm each way ***sitting at office desk looking at ruler***). I think they would be fine transplanting up into individual pots once you've got them past germination and they've grown on a little bit, but pencil thickness is about right for putting out in open ground.

(and what have I told you - it's not possible to ask a numpty question Fiona!! ), yeah I'm back. Becki xx)

Once your leek has about 3 leaves on they are ok to trim the long roots and plant out. Not sure about onion seedlings though..

Some transplant at the crook neck stage, I wait until they are standing up or even later. The stronger the better in my opinion.
