What do you grow up your shed?

The time has come..... I need to stick a shed on my plot.
I'd been feeling a bit aggrieved about loosing 6' x 4' of valuable growing space - BUT, I read in this month's GYO..... stick up some trellis and stick a climber in there!!

Now I can't decide what to grow... do grape vines REALLY grow properly? Howsabout a kiwi? Are there any reliable climbing veggies?

This year I am going to try and grow squash up the side of the shed and across the roof. I saw this idea on telly ages ago and thought I might give it a try. The telly version had it growing out of a compost bin up the side and had squash on the roof and hanging down the sides. Looked very attractive.

If you want something to eat JimmerG you could put your beans there, or Jerusalem Artichokes. Maybe some outdoor tomatoes and cucumbers.

I have honeysuckle growing up mine. Allotment rules say the shed must be at the back of the plot, under the trees, so veg/grapes are out really. Looks very nice though.

Don't forget about the roof of the shed, you could make it into a living roof quite easily, lots of nice plants. Ground nesting birds like to nest on green roofs as they are much safer away from many predators. Some links below if you're interested:

I'm trying to train aubergines, small squash and sweet peas up mine this year...

Grapevines can grow quite thick after a few years and will break the trellis I would be inclined to put peas or beans or suchlike.

Also I havent seen a climbing aubergine yet but it doesnt mean there isnt one out there, but all of the aubergines I have come across have been bush varieties and grow to around five foot in the summer season we have here inside a greenhouse.

What about that climbing corgette I think its called black forest.

I haven't got anything growing up mine yet, but I've got a self-fertile kiwi in a pot (it was only a baby when I got it) and that's being planted there sometime this year

Know what you mean about grapevines, they can get quite thick and woody if you don't cut them back. I also don't know any climbing aubergines but would be interested to hear if there are any. However, wouldn't recommend the Black Forest courgette, it's more spralling than climbing and I think you'd be better with some type of winter squash (not huge pumpkins though) with some wire supports across the sides of the shed. Could look very pretty.

You don't mention if you'd added guttering for waterbuts? You get loads of free water off the shed roof, so if you haven't done it yet, that's the first thing I'd "plant".
You can also hang brackets on the shed (screwing into the stronger uprights) and grow flowers, strawberries or tomatoes in hanging baskets.
I've used the windbreak effect of my shed to plant an apricot tree close by and have an old galvanized dustbin by the shed door in which I plant nasturtiums which ramble everywhere and are great for bees.

I have a kiwi (Jenny) growing up my shed it is now in its third year and so far has been a real disappointment. I will give it this year to see if it comes to anything - if not it will be swapped for a blackberry or something similar.
