hi bex, I was new to growing veg this year. took on half a plot, thought my son would help but he just loved to try digging his way to australia. He enjoys the end result but as for the rest, well at least i get some peace while he stays home with dad. I have done really well this year, have grown potatoes, some from home that had sprouted in the cupboard did just as well as the seed potatoes. Had lots of tomatoes this last month, carrots, cabbages, lettuces, green beans I also have planted some flowers which adds a lot of colour and helps with the pests. Good luck. Wait my strawberrys were fab tasted so much better than the supermarket ones.

Wow, sounds like you've done really well Aunt Sal. I hadn't thought of using potatoes from the cupboard but will give it a try, I always end up throwing a few from each bag away.

As for my son not helping, he hasn't a choice as I'm single and have no one to leave him with so he either helps or sits in the car.

Be wary of planting shop bought eating potatoes - seed potatoes are grown under stricter conditions with regards to keeping them pest & disease free - rotation is taken to the extreme - I think it's a 12 year rotation. If you do grow these, I'd recommend planting them in containers/potato barrel to minimise risk of infecting your allotment with nasties.
