Winter Crops

We have 3 raised beds 3' high x 6' long x 3' wide and are wondering what we can grow in them over winter? We have successfully grown the normal ie salad veg, carrots, beans & parsnips in the home made compost. Anybody got any ideas?

Hi Aldo and welcome - lucky you with those raised beds - I've still learning and am on the way to putting my raised beds in. You'll get plenty of advice and encouragement here. You could plant some garlic - I put some in containers today. I think you could also plant some overwintering onions and some broad beans.

Welcome to the Vine. A raised bed 3ft High should grow pretty well anything as it will escape the worst of the ground frost I would have thought. If you can give them some cover from CLoches you should be able to grow some more carrots (early, fast maturing ones like Amsterdam forcing or the globular rooted ones like Paris Market) Over winter onions will be OK & if you have a look arounfd the garden centres you may see some cabbage & broccoli seedlings you could get some of those & drop in.

Hello Aldo and welcome to the Vine. Can't help you with overwintering veg but lots of other grapes will be able to.

I have sown this week, Grumolo Verde chicory thing, a couple of winter lettuces, lamb's lettuce, cornsalad, onions, tatsoi and trying brassicas (cauli and calabrese). Next month, I intend to sow broad beans (got some sort of Aquadulce, Bunyards Exhibition, The Sutton) and peas (Meteor). I also have Marco garlic to plant.
A couple of weeks back, was given some Mooli-type seeds and they were sown quite deep. Plants up and growing. Can't read Japanese - I think it's Japanese (pic of packet on my blog) so not actually 100% sure what they are and what to do with them.

Hi Aldo, & welcome. You could try turnips, autumn planting onion, shallot & garlic, broad beans or even some peas or all year round lettuce.

Thanks for all the ideas and welcome messages. We'll probably try garlic, broad beens and carrots. Have tried onions before and whilst they grew fine, we thought the returns were poor for the amount of bed taken up.
