carrot seedlings - show yourselves!

Mine were like the photo after two weeks. Mind you, I didn't water them until after they germinated. This time of year, I find that the seeds in my unheated conservatory only need watering about once a week. More often than that and they rot.

There's an old saying about carrots: "Sow in dust, grow they must"

So my Paris Market seedlings have now begun to establish themselves.
I sowed them in concentric circles with one (plus runt) spring garlic clove in the middle - that's the big thing poking up!

I started my Early Nantes in those biodegradable (sp?) thingys indoors, and for the last week they have been moved into a big pots under a large cloche....but since then they haven't really done much, and it gets quite warm in there during the day. Just a waiting game I guess!

this frost business is scaring me even if i bring them in at night

Sowed a few about a week ago, Baby Ideal Red, plastic cloche over the top. Nothing showing yet. Only a few seeds lost if too early though, just sow again later.

Don't worry about sowing carrots in cold conditions - last year I sowed mine outdoors (under coke-bottle "cloches") in February! They were a bit slow to get going, but I had baby carrots all summer. The important thing with all plants is not to move them straight from indoors to outdoors without a "hardening off" period, which is when you put them outdoors during the day and bring them in at night.

Most traditional British veg prefer slightly cool conditions (and some can cope with severe frosts) - they would never have become established here otherwise!

Think I'm a bit later than most of you as haven't sown them yet (as other family health things have got in the way). Plan to sow them shortly. Need to sow them where they plan to stay and grow or else you can get carrot fly. Also plan to sow them all in a raised bed (last year we did some in a raised bed and some in the allotment) as its far easier to pick them from the raised bed and as the allotment is clay, last year it was a nightmare trying to did them up from there. They come up cleaner from the raised bed which is easier in the long run - obviously it depends on space/variety etc.

Mine are tiny but showing now. Thanks for the advice re watering, I will hold off now for a while.

Going to sow them this week - went to prepare the bed I'm planning on sowing the carrots and the next door cats have been using it as their ensuite - eeeow! Gloves were on thank goodness.
