i have been looking after a friends allotment for the last 2 months and went yesterday to find that blight has hit all of the toms. having never seen it before i asked the plot holder next door what to do and she said take all the toms you can and pull up and bin the plants and leaves. ive done that but my concern now is that i might be able to bring blight home on my shoes. obviously i wont let any of the toms near my compost heap but is it possible to infect the toms here by wearing the same shoes i did at the allotment? also, can tom blight infect potatos as they are the same family?

Blight is airborne. It affects spuds and tomatoes with alarming speed.

Remember when Foot-and-Mouth was here? When the footpaths were re-opened, often the farmer would leave a container of "boot-wash" for us to use to hopefully kill the nasties on our shoes. If you are worried about cross-contamination, I suggest you wash your shoes.
