Take another look at Companion Planting

Hi all!

I’m fairly sure I put this same link somewhere on the Vine last year!

I thought as it is now more than time to start to think about what to put where and perhaps what to put with what I thought I would put this link up again to refresh peeps or introduce some of the newbie’s to Companion Planting.

To me It looks like a fun way to grow things and if one plant will benefit another then I’m all for it! I already have a few plans in my head what I’m going to plant with what!

wow, alfalfa looks like a wonder plant!

ALFALFA: Perennial that roots deeply. Fixes the soil with nitrogen, accumulates iron, magnesium, phosphorous and potassium. Withstands droughts with it's long taproot and can improve just about any soil! Alfalfa has the ability to break up hard clay soil and can even send its' roots through rocks! Now that is a tenacious plant! Alfalfa is practically pest and disease free. It needs only natural rainfall to survive.

does this miraculous plant grow in England and is the harvest worth maybe a 2 x 1m section?

Not sure have never grown it b4 but if you have time have a read of this I love wikipedia it is full of useless or in some cased not so useless info!

Interesting were these points.

Basil is good next to tomatoes, which I sort of already knew, but does it have to be in the ground, or can it be in pots?

Don't grow french marigolds next to beans. Didn't know that before.

We live and learn, life is a cycle, but at least we learn from our mistakes and won't repeat them next time Just perhaps this cycle has a few offshoots leading to straighter roads ahead lol. I'm rambling on a bit there! lol I know what i'm on about anyway!

Any idea why you shouldnt plant marigolds near beans? I was going to grow some marigold in pots in front of my tomato growbags. Trouble is i was planning of putting my runner and french beans in the growbags next to the toms. Hmm...

I planted marigolds in with my french beans last year. Trying to remember what happened. Beans did OK anyway, maybe the marigolds didn't get very big.

Yes I did that as well with the same results as you. I guess you live and learn I did read though that marigolds attract slugs, perhaps thats the reason but then I wouldn't plant them next to any veg!

I had good success one year planting cornflowers with sweetcorn..........just sounded right that's all, and both thrived!
