What do other grapes do with their used Grow Bags?

I normally put them on the compost heap, but this year I noticed that 2/3 didn't look too bad (ie lots of roots etc), so wondered whether I could plant winter lettuce in them?

    Hi Jennie
Usually I reuse my growing bags by opening them, removing old roots and transfering whatever compost is left in deep pots mixing some bone / fish meal or whatever and planting winter radishes - rocket - chicory - winter lettuce - etc in order to supply my needs over winter ( Greenhouse ) After that it will go to the compost bin or spread over my allotment. I strongly believe that of every penny I put in gardening I like to see a pound back.

I agree with Don Vincenzo. I've tended to reuse them in pots with more nutrients added or spread on the garden/allotment. Didn't have any this year but all compost in pots will be dug into the small patch at home prior to preparing for next year's experiments.

Thanks for that everyone! I thought I was being a bit "tight" reusing my grow bags, but now I don't feel so bad! DDL

I empty mine into the bottom of deep pots ant top up with fresh compost, after that they are emptied into the garden.

Thanks for all that advice - I thought they would be too nutrient exhausted to grow anything. Brain is now going into overdrive to work out how I can use them over the winter! Thanks Don for the ideas!

You could put them into tubs & grow beans in them as they will fix Nitrogen from the air. There will be enough potash & pfosphates to keep them going for a few weeks & then you can feed with Tomorite or somthing similar.

I usually either put the remains of the bag in the compost bin or hide it in a corner & use it to earth up potatoes the following year but this year I will be sneaking it into the dustbin because the tomatoes I grew in grow bags have come down with blight & I don't want to risk harbouring that for next year!
