Colourful veg are fun- so long as they have flavour..am I right in thinking all carrots were purple originally?????
Do they hold that colour when cooked????

I read that too somewhere Nicos. I seem to remember them changing to orange when they were introduced in Holland

my friend grew them last year........they are purple carrots, she steamed them and they retained their purple colour but boiling them turns them orange, looking forward to growing them! And I will keep you posted

The story goes that all carrots were purple until the Dutch decided to breed them orange as a tribute to the House of Orange. I don't know if it's true or an urban myth, but it sounds good

We used to get purple carrots regularly from the organic shop where we lived in Germany. They look impressive and taste like a regular carrot. I think ours were deeply purple, but with an orange core. I also have some purple haze seeds about somewhere that I have to dig out and plant.

I'm growing yellow French beans (Neckar Gold) and purple mangetout (Ezetha's Krombek Blauwschok) as well as Borlotti "Lingua di Fuoco" and a mix of red- and white-flowered runners - the old boys are going shaking their heads at my gaudy plot!

I sowed some Purple Haze on 20/2 and I noticed last week that they had started poking their heads up. At the same time I sowed some regular coloured Nantes and some white ones, Creme de Lite.

I have some John's Purple (I think that's the name) from the Heritage Seed Library to give a go to this year. Have had purple ones from the farm shop before but not sure what type they were. They were fairly standard carrot taste although a bit nuttier than normal which was really nice. If I like the ones I have then I'm hoping to save some for replanting next year to let them go to seed.

We grew Purple Haze last year & will be again this...kept the purple on the outside but were orange inside...tasted great.

I'm growing those too. Never grown carrots before, got the seeds from a swap with someone, terrified of carrot fly and everything that can go wrong

Isn't it odd that carrots can be grown both orange, and purple - both words which don't rhyme with any other.

I'm growing these these year. Also Parmex (globes) which we had great success with last year and work really well in containers.
