  • What can I grow in the shade?

Have just had a new building put in the garden, unfortunately this now puts part of my veg plot in the shade.

What can I grow in the shade? It's quite heavy clay soil...

    Thanks all.

I understand redcurrants and blackberries can tollerate shade, and quite enjoy wetter conditions, though the fruit may not be quite so sweet. Would that be worth a try?

You could lighten the soil with a layer of compost on top and grow leafy veg that otherwise tend to bolt easily: spinach, rocket, pak choi, that sort of thing. Our garden soil is awful (chalky clay compacted by builder's machinery), but it has only taken 6-inch-high raised beds to turn it into a very successful salad garden!

I also have an area in my garden in full shade. I have onion sets, garlic, carrots, spring onion, parsnip, beetroot and lettuce already planted in the hope that once the summer comes the sun will be higher in the sky.

Ok so it might not work and go horribly wrong - But I have to try.

Welcome to posting Annie... Many questions about shade have been asked in relation to veg, fruit , herbs and flowers so it's well worth doing a Search (button on top menu) to get a huge range of suggestions... Here's a few links to start you off (there's several more). Happy hunting! b.
