I'm gutted! Have I killed my grapevine?

Please Help.

Today I bought a 'Red Alert' seedless grapevine. It is (well was) about two foot tall. It had about a foot of spindly growth coming out from the graft.

Whilst trying to plant it with the roots outside my greenhouse and feed the stem through a hole under the base of the greenhouse I managed to snap the stem off, right down at the graft.

All I'm left with is the bare grafted main stalk which is about the thickness of my thumb attached to the rootstock, gone is the stalk along with all its little buds.

I'm desperate to find out if the damage inflicted is terminal or whether the vine might recover.

I feel so gutted because the vine I planted in my greenhouse last spring never grew, it just died. I think I'm jinxed...maybe I'm destined to eat TESCO grapes forever.

If anyone can offer any advice or help I would be very grateful.

Vines are quite tough - leave it be and see what happens - besides, you can always pot up the snapped of bit and it most likely will grow too.

A couple of years ago I "pruned" my grapevine without knowing what I was doing and it looked very sorry for itself. Imagine my surprise when it grew from what appeared to be nothing into a perfectly leafy vine.

What I'm trying to say is, don't give up - I'm sure it will come back. As Esrikandan said, they are quite tough and if you plant the snapped bit it will probably grow and that way, you will have 2

Naw..you won't have to live on TESCO grapes. Buy some from MORRISONS. I do, and they are lovely.

Believe grapevines are very hard. My partners grapevines at the moment (although I don't know the varieties but think they are for making wine not dessert grapes) look just like pieces of dried out wood (as they have in past years). Each year we cut them right down (think we may be a little late this year as personal things have got in the way) and they always come back.

We used them in 2007 to make wine with and had several compliments about it from other allotment growers on the plot when we took them to a BBQ there.
