Cost of buying seeds

The cost of buying seeds seems to have risen by several hundred per cent. Certain seeds, such as physalis and some of the better tomato varieties, used to come in reaonable sized packets that would last several years with care. This year they are working out at between 20p and 50p per seed, which seems incredible. The cost of production cannot have risen that much.

Has anyone else found they are paying much more for seed, and does anyone have any suggestions for dealing with the problem?

I save toms (even F1 varieties - you don't get exactly the same but you always get something worth eating) peas, beans. That's most of the things I grow. Even got true potato seeds this year. Then you can swap with the generous people on here. I've spent much less this year I can tell you!

Lots of offers on ebay after autumn.

Lidl and Aldi/Poundstretcher and Poundland are all good...

I placed my seed order with Suttons in October.They produce B&Q own range of seeds(the same names,less choice but cheaper)Try some smaller retailers,not the big ones..Lidl has cheap seeds(no probs with germination)and Morrisons as well.E-bay bargains-bulk of 20 packets for 4£ or so.I'm going to try saving my own seeds this year-as Flum suggest.If you save more than you need you can always swap them for something else here.I'm not going to grow 300 cabbages this year so I swapped half a packet for some pumpkins

Our local Gardening Club recently had a talk from two guys who grow and show both flowers and veg - and they both went as far as to say that Lidl seeds were by far the best value seeds they had come across.

Thanks for this link Snadger. The prices here are a lot more reasonable. I am going to try some of theirs, see how it goes.
