    We wage war on them in summer...Child labour is a marvellous thing!
    I get a few curly spears -bit dessicated and beige- is that beetle damage then? i had assumed it was slugs before. I usually find that grubs stripping ferns is a nuicence. I try and find as many eggs as possible but they are a real pain and all very time consuming.

      Ah now.It may be slugs but the beetle def distorts the shoots too.

        I planted my asparagus last year and this year about 3/4 of the plants have come up. What I was wondering was can I plant extra plants in between my current ones to fill in the gaps or am I likely to damage the exisiting roots too much?

          Yes, but i'd wait a while yet, grow a few crowns from seed this year to replace females and gaps. I find that there are always a few crowns that are slow to appear. wait till end of summer mark the miss spots accurately and replace next spring
