I think the stuff on your BB was the BB going gooey and rotting?

The mould they are talking about is the white fluffy stuff you get on the actual cardboard tube, normally around the bottom. It does absolutely no harm at all and when you plant out the tube rots away normally and your seedling (and you) is fine.

Why on earth do you bother doing things like microwaving when it's not needed?

Oh! I'll go have a poke around and see if there is a BB still there! Thanks.

On the subject of pot hygiene, I'm more of a soap and bleach it to death type of gardener, myself. Anything that needs pressure cooking or microwaving probably lives in the soil quite happily already. :-)

Well I leave pots outside so they get good and frosted over the winter, apart from the odd slug that now and again gets carried inside I've never had any problems.

I never ever wash pots. I don't like using anything on the plants or plot that isn't needed.
And judging by the amount of spiders inside my greenhouse, I'm not going to bother cleaning that with anything but slightly soapy warm water either.

I forgot to microwave the first batch of loo rolls I used for my leeks but remembered to with the next lot. Both have now got a pretty similar amount of mould on them so I don't think it made the slightest bit of difference!

as well as the white fluffy mould, you might also get lil mushrooms growing up from the loo roll tube after you've planted them in the ground... they only grow up at night, last the night, then collapse the next morning. I wouldn't eat them, but they don't do any harm. I only know about them cos i go out at night slug hunting!!!

Thought i'd mention that in case anyone else hasn't come across them before...

I don't microwave - I just try not to get the cardboard too soggy. The mould's harmless anyway. Dinna fash yersel'
