  • Cobra trauma

I have some healthy young cobra beans that I realised were getting a bit ahead of themselves because they were indoors. So yesterday I potted them on and put them ourside for about 3 hours to start hardening them off. They now look very sad Have I caused to much trauma on one day? is this normal? or is there anything I can do to get them back to their previous peppy selves?

lol, probably! I read they could be sown in April and I got a bit ahead of myself. On the up side I have plenty of time to start again...

Hmmmmmm, the weather has been a bit chilly lately - and French beans are a little delicate. I suspect they got a bit of a shock. I'd say it was a little early for sowing Cobra, let alone hardening them off.

Have they dramaticaly flopped? If they have - its not normal, my instinct would be to bring them back indoors. Do they have enough water?

Onec they've recovered, maybe just stick them a greenhouse or cold frame during the day and bring them back indoors at night - temps will drop for next week!

They really don't like cold winds, methinks you might want to sow again and just experiment how far you can push these ones.

Sometimes they recover, but sometimes they don't.

It will soon be warm enough to sow outdoors which means no hardening off needed.

Don't know about you zazen, but if I sow before the middle of May, my seeds almost always rots in the ground and gets eaten by bugs.

              Even then it happens alot.

I never sow in the ground...modules only. But outdoors, in modules, peas are coming through now. So, it won't be long until the beans can go outdoors.

As everyone else has said, and you have discovered: it's too early for French Beans (they're from South America ... it's a bit warmer over there).

Start them off about a month before your last frost.

I do mine late April. Then I only have to sow them once!

Okay, lesson learnt. I need to sit on my hands a bit. I will probably plant straight out into modules in the cold frame in a couple of weeks then. I also have peas inside but they seem a bit more rufty tufty so I will carry on hardening them off and put them out with the beans. sigh.
