Help? Difference between S/onion and Leek?

Hi,

Ive managed to misplace my labels for my spring onions and leeks, so i dont know from looking which is which. At the moment they are ready to be tranfered into deeper pots, but i cant tell them apart.

Can anybody tell me what to look for. They are both about 4 inch's high. Does one smell more than the other? etc.

Perhaps itll teach me to secure my labels better.

I think if you crush one of the leaves, the spring onion should smell more spring oniony.

When they get a bit bigger, there will be a difference in leaf colour - spring onions will stay a fresh green colour, where leeks will turn a more grey-green or blue-green. Also, spring onion leaves are more like tubes and leek leeves are flattish.
I don't know if you can wait long enough for that to happen though? Perhaps you could pot them up and wait for them to grow bigger?

I've just been out to my little tray of onions and leeks for seed saving next year...they were sown in December.

the only difference is the label.

Sorry, you've just going to have to either wait or take a guess. Did you sow more spring onion seeds then leeks?


Personally, I don't transplant into deeper pots....it's too fiddly.

the way i can usually tell is by smell,crush a couple and i find leeks smell well like leeks and onions like onions do.failing that i wait a while longer and then the onions usually die on me, and if not i know they are leeks! easy.
