Good thinking... It seems unlikely(at least very unusual) that there are multiple crowns in a pot...that is a pretty impressive looking crown though - at least 2 years old. Unless maybe it was just a bunch of matted seed left unthinned it would have been obvious when you knocked the soil off.
I have brought asparagus from Highfield nurseries (perhaps 7 years ago)...they came as barerooted crowns in binbags and a cardboard box (probably pretty much straight from Holland.)
Good job on the bed ...should be able to fit at least 6 or 7 more in there in 2 staggered rows.
PoshC...My chooks have never shown any interest in asparagus...still I'd stop them scratching up a new bed if I were you.
