Good thinking... It seems unlikely(at least very unusual) that there are multiple crowns in a pot...that is a pretty impressive looking crown though - at least 2 years old. Unless maybe it was just a bunch of matted seed left unthinned it would have been obvious when you knocked the soil off.

I have brought asparagus from Highfield nurseries (perhaps 7 years ago)...they came as barerooted crowns in binbags and a cardboard box (probably pretty much straight from Holland.)

Good job on the bed ...should be able to fit at least 6 or 7 more in there in 2 staggered rows.

PoshC...My chooks have never shown any interest in asparagus...still I'd stop them scratching up a new bed if I were you.

Thanks, bazzaboy and Paul. I'm pleased you enjoyed the photos. The root growth definitely belonged to the crown.

      The label information follows:

"Irresistable TEMPTATIONS Garden Plants" Code 37

"Asparagus Cito - A wonderful home grown delicacy. Widely grown as the best eating variety. It's fern-like foliage makes a very attractive ornamental plant through summer. Early cropping with a heavy yield of medium sized spears. Suitabhle for all areas in UK. Performs best in well drained fertile soil."

I planted potatoes in the rest of the raised bed but once they're harvested, I'll keep the whole bed for asparagus in the future.

I'd like to leave the crowns now they are planted and don't really want to dig them up.

If they're two years old, or more, does that mean that I could crop next year, or should I leave them until the following season?

You can probably take a couple of spears from each....but letting them establish is important.

Thanks. I'll let them establish, I think. I can wait.

                Hello Demeter and Paul.

The seeds arrived this morning. I was very impressed at how quickly they got here. very good of you both to send them.

Look forward to growing them. I'll have to prepare a bed first.
