Anyone tried growing carrots in kitchen roll tubes?t s

I have seen that some germinate seeds etc in toilet roll tubes and was wondering if anyone has grown carrots to full size in kitchen rolls?

I think they measure about 9" so I imagine that is deep enough if you place the rolls on a bit of compost if growing in pots.

hmmmmm the answer is nooooo. but give it a go as an experiment and let us know, i tend to grow mine in a specially raised bed, compost mixed with sand and sow plenty of seed thinning out as and when..........

I have about a dozen outside as we speak, all in kitchen towel middles. My soil is horrible here, so grow the majority of my carrots in containers. Didnt try it last year, but am doing so this. I filled the tubes with a mix of sand and light compost, and actually sowed them individually as well. (Not easy when you have big fat sausage fingers like me).

Plan to grow as many of my possible in raised beds as did this last year and they were certainly far easier to pull up. Have to ensure that you don't give carrot fly etc a chance to eat your produce before you do. Saying that, however, suppose it would be worth an experiment.

I've got some growing in a plastic coke bottle. They are baby carrot size at the moment (I dug one up).

I think I may try it myself then once I have saved up enough kitchen rolls!

I knew I shouldn't have given them to the dog to play with.

When you say 'some' how many do you have in one bottle?

There were 5 seedlings to start with but I accidentally killed two It's my first go at carrots and I did start them in the middle of winter which didn't help. I think you could probably fit 5/6 to full size.

no problem starting them in tubes then planting them out, and the tube rots away as the carrots grow.

If I grew carrots in a tub and used a loo roll inner as a collar slightly sunk into the soil and sitting around the carrot seed would that help to stop carrot fly?

I wouldn't have thought so, they can fly up to around 30cm I believe so although it might make it more difficult for them to sniff out the seedlings, once the carrots had grown a bit the protection would end. I would be more worried about the loo roll shading the seedling and slowing down early growth, making it more vulnerable to the dreaded sl*gs...

I thought I was being too optimistic about that one.
