So I've just bought a new house, and become the proud owner of one rusty old wheelbarrow. I don't want to throw it out though; I thought it might make a nice feature, and I'm short of space to grow things/money to buy those big containers! I thought I once read a feature about growing things in wheelbarrows if I drilled a couple of holes in the bottoms, so any ideas what would be good to grow in there?

My first answer was going to be - "wheels"
If you can't find any wheel seeds maybe salads or, for the cottage garden look, herbs and flowers. Final suggestion - marigolds. Then you can wheel them around your plot to wherever they are most needed.
PS that would be "wheely" cool.Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

In my first garden I had an old ornamental wooden wheelbarrow that I renovated and painted and filled with cottage garden flowers.
It was at the front door until some swine walked away with it.....plants and all!My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

ps I really like the marigold idea, sort of a moveable hit squad."Orinoco was a fat lazy Womble"
Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

we found a rat's nest in our wheelbarrow the other day. I wouldn't recommend one of those. *shudder* Nasturtiums would look nice, they would train over the edge and soften it a bit. The herb idea is a lovely one too.We plant the seed, nature grows the seed, we eat the seed - Neil, The Young Ones
