to grow Beetroot in a box?
If so how big a box/ how many to a box?

Absolutely! Any container with with a depth of, say eight inches or more I would have thought. Any less and you may run into probs with the soil drying out. As long as you have decent, moisture retentive growing medium and keep things watered you could probably grow a single seed to maturity in a four inch pot (as long as you want quite small beetroot)!
Remember that each beetroot "seed" probably has two or three seeds within it, which is why one tends to get "bonus" plants when modular planting. Not a problem though, beetroot tend to push eachother out of the way and seem quite happy to grow in a clump - again - as long as you prefer smaller beets.
On Gardeners World las tyear, I seem to recall them growing all sorts of veggies in all sorts of containers.
Give it a go! What's the worst that could happen?

Thanks Creemteez (love that name!) I've got a plastic storage box thingy, about 12/14inches deep and I have already bought my seeds.
Is ordinary multipurpose compost ok? I have seen vegetable compost, would that be better?

Ooooo I can almost taste those beetroot sandwiches!

almost all veg can be grown in tubs/ old paint pots etc.... just space them apart as you would if in the ground . Only problem with pots 'is you do need to watch out for dry days/weeks and make sure you dont let them dry out. your need to feed them more too.

I had some beetroot I'd planted in the six cell polystyrene modules last year, and they didn't all get planted out. One tray was abandoned in the bottom of the greenhouse, and got splashed with water as and when. Amazingly I got 3 beetroot the size of tennis balls, but I think they cheated a bit and rooted into the greenhouse floor. They did look funny though as they ended up perched on the top of the cells

It's often the ones you take less care about that are most successful.
Like when I bake a cake, if I throw everything in and bung it in the oven it is often better than the ones I take more care over.

Remember to drill some holes in your box for drainage!
