What veg seeds have you bought from Lidl?

I know a few high street supermarkets sell veg seeds but Lidl seem to have the largest choice.

The problem is, there are so many, unless you know what you are looking for and recognize the name of a particular type it is a bit overwhelming and you either buy the wrong things or come back with nothing. Then you try to remember what you saw to read up about it and have forgotten what the hell it was.

Perhaps if we could list which types we have bought so that others can have a look out for them.

I have bought Restina Cucumber, Brittle Wax Dwarf French Bean, Di Nizza Marrow (but it says Courgette underneath) and Roodnerf Brussels Sprouts.

I have bought various seeds from Lidl. They have all germinated just fine (though I had a dreadful growing year last year and succeeded with very little overall) We have had a good crop from the yellow dwarf bean - brittle wax - though I can't say what they taste like as I don't eat beans.

I would be inclined to say that as the seeds are so inexpensive, they are worth a punt if you fancy them

Can't knock the Lidl seeds, have grown them for a few years, even got the Netto seeds this year 19p a pack

I've had the yellow beans for two years and got a lovely crop, good taste as well, the gherkins, grew like crazy but a little bitter to eat if not pickled and the round courgettes which were just like all courgettes but did crop well.
I've had radishes, spring onions, beetroot and lettuce as well but don't recall anything particular about them.
Generally all very good value for money though.

Went to Netto tonight and bought Cress, Sunflowers, Peas, Courgettes and Leeks at 19p why not :-)

Bought seeds from Lidl for the 1st time this year - would have tried lots more, but I had already bought the bulk of what I wanted. I got Carrot Nantes and Basil, plus some Cosmos. Carrots have appeared now, so we'll see if they survive the slugs! Good thread this, I might have bought more if I knew what to expect (yes, I know I said I didn't need it anyway )

I've got some Marmande (Beef) toms - just about to prick them out, looks like they all have geminated!

Just like MrsC, i`v been getting the 19p country value packets from Netto and i`m finding them no different to any other brand of seed i`ve used over the last couple of years, only much better value for money!

Second year of purchasing from Lidl this year. I have sown restina cucumber only this week and its already germinated. I have also brought gherkins, onions, melons, and french marigold seeds. Will let you know how they get on.

Last year grew parsley from seed and some flower seeds and they all did ok. I have managed to keep the parsley going in the greenhouse.

I had a very good crop last year from the round courgette seeds, the beans all germinate well too.

Went to Lidl again today and bought Sunburst Squash, Sugar Baby Water Melon, Courgette Di Niizzo, California Wonder Peppers and Radish Ostergruss Rosa.

The Radish I bought in error, wanted purple carrots but was in a hurry and didnt read the packet just went on the photo, well they look like purple carrots in the picture. Oh well, maybe I will grown them or maybe I will pass them on to someone who likes Radish.

Restina mini-cucumber from Lidl - have grown this 3 years running in pots - an F1 hybrid with all-female flowers - hassle free as pollination not required. You wont go wrong with this cucumber variety, good tolerance to our coolish summers, producing up to 4 Kg fruit or more per plant (30 to 60 fruits) if looked after well. I found 100% germination, costing less than 50 p for 30 seeds - incredible value for F1 hybrid seed. Fruits are succulent & refreshing, use straight in fresh salad - though a gherkin type cucumber I have never used them for pickling.

As a newbie can you give me some advice please.

I have some 12" square pots, would one of these be big enough for these cucumbers and what do you use for support?

Sow seeds indoors in early to mid-April, in fibre pots then transplant two per 20 Litre pot (your 12" pots approx) outdoors with thermal protection till around mid to end-May. I train mine vertically up strings/wires/bamboos on our patio. It's an all female F1 which makes life simpler for fruit set. Got first fruit during June. From time of first flowering started giving a half-strength liquid tomato fertilizer feed (I used Tomorite but there are cheaper versions) with every watering. Pots were mulched. Don't let pot saucers dry out in dry spells - water generously till saucer overflow. No need to pinch out main shoot apex - jut leave vines to grow vertically (but you'll need to nurture this a bit) - mine were around 2.5 metres by end of season. Last 2 years they've consistently given between 30 to 60 mini cucumbers (delicious for fresh salads) per plant or 3.5 to around 4.5 Kilos per plant, fruiting from June to October. Appears to be a robust cucumber variety, very good disease resistance and more tolerant to cooler temperatures than other cucumber varieties.
