Tomatillo, Cape Gooseberry, Salad Burnet or Welsh Onion from seed?

I've had disastrous results so far, as in no germination whatsoever.
Have now tried keeping moist, allowing to dry, half and half... all at indoor conservatory temperatures, all in seed compost

i think i've run out of Tomatillo seeds now, but have more of the others.

Any advice would be welcomed with open arms!

I've grown tomatillos before, I germinated them in a heated propagator in the porch.
It was a couple of years ago, but I don't remeber having any problems with them except them being huuuge!

I put mine in module, watered them, nothing happened for 2 weeks, I watered them again, put them in a plastic bag in the unheated greenhouse, 4 have sprouted in 3 days.

First time growing last year and grew them as I would Tomatoes

Just sow the last of your seeds in the next few weeks as you would your main toms.

Keep the trays/modules/pots in a waterproof tray and water from the tray and not the soil.

Welsh onion...usually grows from splitting another welsh onion doesn't it?

If you put your pots/trays whatever that you have already sown outdoors somewhere, you might find they spring up when it gets warmer anyway...don't throw it away just in case.

I sowed tomatillo last weekend in an unheated propogator in our utility room and they've just started to come through when I looked this morning.

Yeah, as Zazen says, try moving your salad burnet and welsh onions outside, at least through the day, they probably don't need to be so warm as indoors?

I've sown tomatillo indoors in a heated propagator same as toms and seemed to germinate okay. If you want more seeds pm me I think I still have a few.

thanks to all - i will see if anythng happens with my welsh onions/salad burnet and pop them out in the greenhouse

i'll sow the tomatillo last few seeds and pop them in the greenhouse too, but maybe in a plastic bag!

I sow Tomatillo same as for tomatoes but find they take a few days extra to germinate. Unfortunately I've just sown my last few else I'd send you some. I got mine from the organic catalogue and they're sow by 2007 but have done okay.

Ian, if you are really down to your last few, what about sowing onto kitchen roll, wetting it and putting it into a bag. Then, once they have germinated, pop them into little pots, and grow on from there.

If you put your tomatillos into the greenhouse, bag or not, they won't germinate for ages. I meant - put the current pots or trays outdoors and see what happens; meanwhile sow your remaining seeds indoors - as you would your main tomatoes.

is this a silly question? would a sandwich bag be ok and should i make a few holes in it?

regarding the welsh onion - i got seeds from that 50p seed place on the internet - GrowMoreVeg I think it is called.

I've grown capr gooseberries and welsh onions from seed, the onions seemed to take forever to germinate but they're wuite happy now (18 months on) and have overwintered well.

The cape gooseberries all did well and are growing away in the raised beds - there are 2 types so be careful - but they were erratic.

Neither grown inside, onions in situ and the cgs in pots and transplanted.

I'm sure a sandwich bag will be fine, I don't think seeds are 'baggist'. Anything to keep the moisture in. Cling film works for me when I am trying lots with different germination times.
