thick skinned Toms

Hi - everytime i have grown Tomatoes in the past the skins end up rather thick and unpleasant to eat...why is this and how can i prevent it this year?
Is it temperature related? or too much/a lack of water? i grow them outside in a south facing bed

One thing that upsets tomatoe skins is irregular watering. If you let them dry out, the skins harden, then when you water them again the fruits swell and split. So the only thing I can suggest is keep watering them regularly, and don't let then dry out.

Could be the variety - I am only growing Sungold this year, they are delicious (but so thin-skinned that they tend to split)

i think its the watering! i have been known to be a little sporadic, must do better! Thanks Jimmer. Will start taking notes if varieties aswell Two Sheds!

Do toms get thicker skins by virtue of being outside? I would imagine ones in a greenhouse are more protected and therefore more "delicate"?
