Starting out in a bigger way

me and the misses have both been keen on growing for a whilst

we have a patch around 20' by 20' and also got a patio about 20' by 35' i have just bought a greenhouse to go on this as it gets so much sun, but i also have some fibreglass ponds {trays} that are 36" square and about a 12" deep, i run an aquarium shop and have picked them up from there, i am wondering what a good crop would be for them i have 6 of them in total

we seem to have good luck with beans potatos beetroot tattys and onions so far, havent had the space for masses till now

we dont have any luck with peas or carrots, we have tried for 3 seasons, but we live at the bottom of a slope so i think its the rain as it will be bone dry then soaking wet not ideal for them i guess

any pointers or threads that would be good reading, i also fancy doing quite a few peppers and chillis this year

we havent sowed the seeds yet so it might be a bit late i guess

Peas and carrots - how are you sowing and growing them? Peas love the moisture so it can't be that.

previous years i have been banned from the garden as its her and her mum that like to do most of it, but her stepdad is a gardener and would have been involved, it might be a bit shaded in that area prehaps, they did germinate and grow just failed to crop any thing

Possibly lack of the right nutrients then. Have you thought of raised beds?

yeah this is something we are planning but that might not be till next year now as i want to re do the layout with sleepers, this year it will be mainly the conatiners but they are big at 55 gallons each so prehaps i could try peas in them ? how deep will the need the soil to be ?

what would you grow in an area with lots of sun and in 55 gallon containers ?

we want to do quite a few garlic and onions this year {probably have the time completely wrong though} but i was considering planting them in the flower beds after growing them out in the greenhouse, as we have a largeish garden as well

Pond weed? Watercress?
Seriously, if they don't have drainage holes in them, they aren't no good for plants.

At this time of year, put them straight in the ground. You only start them in a greenhouse during winter.
Wilkinsons are still selling sets.

hi i will simply drill the bottom of them for drainage, not going to use them to hold water any more as they are a bit to tatty for my shop now

yeah will be putting some sets out and use the greenhouse for mainly peppers i think
