  • Rogue seedlings

Does anyone else ever find any rogue (for want of a better word) seedlings in their pots when growing seeds indoors?

I am using a brand new bag of Miracle Gro potting mixture but I have found 2 seedlings growing with my tomato plants and I haven't got a clue what they are or where they have come from!

I have taken them out and repotted them just so I can find out what the eck they are.

By the way, I have germinated all of my seeds under the sink in tubs on wet kitchen roll and have planted them in my Miracle Gro only to read elsewhere that you shouldn't grow seedlings in Miracle Gro Potting mix, is that right?

Seeds have all the nutrients they need (to germinate) inside themselves - therefore they don't need compost that has feed in it.

Save that for larger seedlings when you pot on.

Thanks, I wondered why you wouldn't need it for seeds.

I only bought it because it was on special offer, 3 x 56l bags for £12.

I have two rouge seedlings of the same type - I don't know what they are. One is growing in my basil pot and one with the carrots. I'm going to leave them for a bit and see what they are.

I mean rogue - they're not RED. I'm feeling a bit sleepy, never mind - soon be cocktail hour!

Don't worry about it though - I've had to start lots of seeds off in Multi-Purpose compost because I can't get out for the seed sowing stuff. They're doing fine
As for the seedlings popping up, yes it happens from time to time, the Gem compost I used last year was terrible for it! Mostly they were grass seed, but there was a few 'mystery' ones too. I didn't bother finding out what they were because my greenhouse was groaning at the seams anyway , just pulled them out and chucked them.

I am using miracle grow to pot on seedlings and I have had a few unwanted seedling coming up, I am putting it down to seeds that have survived the composting stage the only way to stop this happening is to get heat treated compost or heat treat it yourself.
All I do is pull the unwanted seedling out and put it in the bin.

I'm still at that new stage where I'll go "ooooh what is it? let's leave it and see!!" I don't do that in my established plants or beds, just the newly seeded pots.

This is what happens when you grow seedling from multi purpose compost!

It got so big that it is now in the great compost bin in the sky!

I potted on a lupin early last year, using B&Q's Multi-purpose compost, to find a mystery plant growing soon after. I re-potted it and covered it with frost fleece over the winter, as my north facing yard is a frost pocket; I uncovered it last month when the sun came out to find a rather healthy elderberry plant!!!

Now that might've come from a bird poop

That's what I am like too, my husband thinks I'm mad!

He could have a point there.
