I sowed some rice seeds today. This is one of my whimsical experiements for the year. They are "Oryza Sativa Japanese rice - Koshihikari" from Jungle Seeds. I am told that this variety does not need to be wet in a padi field or anything - just well watered. I have sown mine deep (about 2") in a large pot and will transplant into the ground come June, assuming they germinate! - all as per the instructions.

Anyone else grown this before or trying it this year? any tips?

The first seedling emerged today. I was astonished because they were sown a good 2" deep only 4 days ago, and I wasn't expecting it to be so quick... the only reason I was looking at it at all was because I was taking the toms out of the heated propagator so I thought I would pop the rice in there instead.

We'll see I guess whether this was a rogue seed that happened to get near the surface or whether the others pop up soon as well. Quite exciting.

How cool. Might have a wander over to Jungle Seeds and get some for myself!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Is this where we tell you to step away from the KB...?!

Sounds like an interesting experiment, could be great for peeps with a permanently wet patch. I'll be watching with interest too

Wow, I'd love to give it a go but I don't think they'd do well in pots! Good luck with them and keep us posted on your progress

                Aw shucks...

I couldn't resist having a little poke around and the first seedlings is deffo a rogue as the roots only go down about half an inch or so from the surface! I guess it is a good sign if at least one of the seeds was viable, and also I can stop scrutinising the bare compost around it every 5 minutes now!

Right - they are definitely on the go now! (I think judging by the height of the tallest, they may have come up yesterday in fact) - so that's 9 or 10 days from germination to appearance! I have 15 seedlings so far, not counting the first "rogue" which died. Whoop!

i hope that wasn't a whoop for the death of the rogue
