Im not so sure. We all harp on about being organic gardeners but none of us qualify, We dont meet the criteria of living at least ten miles away from anyone using sprays etc and most of us use tap water at some stage of watering which is full of chemicals. I think we should drop the mythical label of organic and just accept we should keep chemicals to a minimum. Not claim lifestyles we have no qualification for

If it wasnt for the European Union we might still be using DDT, at least growing the veg gives more exersize.

I'd like to post a more coherent reply, but all this non-organic easter chocolate has befuddled my chemical-filled brain - and besides, I've got some non-organically produced courgette seeds to sow in my peat-free compost so I don't have to buy the pesticide-treated supermarket courgettes this summer, before I come back in and treat myself to a cup of mind-warping tap water...

What a whirling mass of ideological contradictions I am... it's amazing I manage to make it through the day...

I don't get his attitude, you weren't preaching about organics, you were trying to cut down on something, surely sensible? He sounds like the organic basher you meet every now and again, hating it for the sake of it, without really understanding it.
I've read that (about the water) - I usually leave the watering can full too, and use it after about 24 hours - of course, most of the stuff outdoors gets more than enough rainwater here.

I agree with your second comment too. The interesting thing is that Plotman just said to the man that the enviromesh is preferable to spraying - that can't be called OTT preaching of organics, indeed it was just a response to the man's enquiry. That man sounds as if he'd like to have as good a garden himself.

Hate to be the one to say it, but ALL bottled "Mineral Water" has additives to give it a shelf life - so I'm informed. It's one of my major beefs with The Mother and her insistance in drinking only bottled water (yes - even for making tea - for crying out loud!) -because "it's pure"!!!

Why are we 'claiming lifestyles we have no qualification for'? sorry, I don't understand your point, rain water has massive amounts of chemicals in it, many of them far more damaging to the environment. Just try looking in a pond that is in an area with high acid rainfall, the water will be crystal clear... trouble is it should be full of algae, and small creatures and be quite soupy.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Can you point me towards someone who is 'harping on'

I think you'll find everyone here does what works best for them in whatever circumstances they find themsleves. Don't know a single one who preaches or claims to have 'the answers'.

Theoretically speaking mains water is better for Brasicas because there is nitrogen in it that is not in rain water .
How do you know that you wonder i was told by a Trading Standards Officer that came round on my milk round when i drove a tanker .
It was one of the tests they did when looking for added water from dodgy farmers (there are some)....jacob

And comes in plastic bottles. Also any water from a natural source picks up minerals from the rock that it has flowed through/over. Fact is it would be impossible to drink pure H2O unless we distilled it and made sure we made an exemplarary job of the distillation too, so all the arguments about a water source for our veg are also pointless, whatever we do we're going to get chemicals of one sort or another.

Heaven forefend that we allow ourselves to make considered choices, lest we be called 'hypocrites'

Who gives a flying £@%! what some miserable, argumentative grumbleweed thinks about those choices... I'm certainly not going to be sobbing into my enviromesh about it...

Just ate the chocolate easter bunny's ears... does this mean I can't call myself a 'semi-vegetarian' any longer?

Let's not call (or imply that) people are stupid, please. Thank you.

Plotman, I think that you started this thread as a discussion, and not to have a go at people for calling themselves organic gardeners?

Thread closed as certain people seem to think that re-posting the same thing several times after being deleted is ok. It isn't.
