I read somewhere that you can sow 5 or 6 together in a clump and sow into modules, then plant out as a clump. As you pull one up, it goves the others time to grow some more. I was supposed to use modules, but just used a tray. I didn't have much luck getting them out so just planted them out in blocks. Will see what happens. They seem happy enough at the moment.
To the other person that asked about sowing the previous year, I sowed in Sept last year and even though it wasn't that clever because of the above, it was brilliant for the onions growing fast enough.
If you look at the other SO thread, you will see that I have problems growing SO's, zazen999 reckons I don't feed them enough, I reckon onions have a standing order to annoy me all the time."Orinoco was a fat lazy Womble"
Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I never sow spring onions direct now and find the module method so easy. To get the clumps out you just need to wait till the roots fill the module and they come out very easily indeed. The clumps are then plantoed out around 4-6" apart.
I do the same with beetroot seeds, chard, spinach and all work very well. With 4 plots I dont do "fiddly" or any other work that is not needed I can assure you. Module sowing is less fiddlly in the end as to plant you just poke a finger into the soil and a module goes in just nicely, plus there is no thinning out to do, just harvesting.
Oh, and at 60p for a bunch of 5 or 6 I dont class spring onions as a cheap item in the shopping basket.

My salads were sown the same way, and one squish and the module pops out roots and all...not only that....but when you do put them into the final position they are less likely to fade away and wilt as they are in the same state as they were in the modules...
Blommin marvelous technique....if you've got the patience and can leave them alone until the roots are poking out of the bottom.

NB. Mine always grow, just not for harvesting in the same year My leeks & spring onions from last year's sowings are only just now of eating size. But very welcome in a stir fry all the same. All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

I've put this on another thread, but just trying to re-motivate module onion growers.....
Sown last autumn, grow all winter, harvested today.
Keep with it, it really works.
