What veggies like mulching and when should i put it on. I propose putting grass clippings on onions after compost to suppress weeds, is this right or not, any suggestions

Mods, I reckon "Growing Techniques" needs a better name - one can hardly fault newcomers for homing in on it

Big_digger, I think most crops benefit from mulching of some kind, either to keep water in or suppress weeds. I know grass cuttings can be used to "earth up" potatoes, but I don't know what other crops they're suitable for - sorry!

Grass clippings are an excellent mulch (not too thick, mind, or they'll cook). I put them on onions and spuds (helps to prevent scab). If I had access to more, I would put them around my beans too.

I use straw for mulching over my spuds between the onions and under the squash and pumpkins

Hear, hear. Perhaps we should have a competition to think up the best name, something to suggest distilled wisdom while also making clear that it's not meant to be where you ask questions...
OK, I admit it, I'm stumped.

For my pumpkins, which have about 3 foot of room, I mulch with whole newspapers (soaked first, and topped with soil to look tidy). It really cuts down on the watering.

Ditto with beans.

I was under the impression (although i may have just invented it!!) that fresh grass clippings was bad for mulching with as it made whatever is underneath it too hot & rotted it - is this wrong then?
