  • Tomato Food !!!!!!!!

When working in the greenhouse this morning i heard a fella talking about gardening and answering questions from listeners on the radio.
Any way whilst he was talking to mollie the presenter he mentioned this supa dupa tomato feed i don't know if any body has heard about this before .
What it is is the dust out of the dust bag on your hoover he used to work at the Wellsbourne Research centre and it was some thing they delved into there .
Apparently it contains all sorts of stuff very benifical to growing Tomato's .
The programe was on BBC coventry and warwickshire between 10 am and 1pm it is available on play back and the snippet was just after 11am....jacob (ps his name was steve)

Well it's always been suggested you put the contents of the hoover on your compost heap. I've always reckoned that it depends what you are hoovering up!

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I heard hoover bag contents are fine to put on compost heap, as long as your carpets are wool based not nylon, as this won't break down.
Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that, I'll be over
          here, looking through your stuff.

Hmmm, I doubt our landlord paid out for wool carpets, probably cheap stuff!! Oh well! But surely it would be mostly dead skin cells and hair anyway? That should breakdown ok I would have thought...

I know what goes into our machine and there's no way I would subject a poor tomato to that!

I'd say old skin cells and hair would break down very quickly - otherwise I guess we'd be walking in them up to our ankles!

I think wool carpets would be best, but in my (very limited) knowledge I'd say synthetic fabrics throw out far fewer fibres. Someone else might be more knowledgeable about that.

Overall, even though I've never thought of it before, and never knew it was advised to put hoover bags on the compost, I think it makes sense.

Yes Jacob, I've heard put the dust from the hoover bag on the compost heap but not specifically use it as a tomato feed. I don't know how you would do that.
I prefer to give my bag of rubbish to the council. I know what's in there - all the builders stoor and rubbish.
