My tomatoes are going wrong help please.

The top leaves of my tomatoes have gone a darker/blacker green than the other leaves but it is not over the whole leaf. has any one got any ideas it looks like it has some sort of problem. I tried to take some photos but it does not show up very well.

I would have thought that its a bit too early for disease, I personally think it more likely due to certain circumstances such as not enough or too much water, lack of nutriunts, too hot/ cold, lack of light etc..

If you can upload a phot then great if you cant then a bit more info on where they are growing, what you are growing them in (soil/compost etc) are they in a heated propagator or not, how often are you watering them and are you feeding them or not.

Hi I had the tomatos in the conservatory but when we went on holiday I put them outside into the little greenhouse with a dripper, that was about a week ago.
I now think it might have got some frost. I am growing them in compost and they are now about 15 cm tall, im watering them in the morning and evening just enough so that the soil is moist.

You say the top leaves are darker than the lower leaves and you are worried about the dark leaves but it could be the lower leaves are too "soft" - ie grown in too much heat with not enough light for that amount of heat... the leaves become very light green and "floppy". Often the plant becomes too tall as well.

How many true leaf stalks does it have ?

At 6" tall it should have at least 3 true leaf stalks (preferably 4 or 5).

im watering them in the morning and evening just enough so that the soil is moist.

Watering is very much a personal preference but I think that is too much. I water my 6" plants every 3 or 4 days when the compost is almost (but not fully) dry.

Too much water can lead to too much top growth and not enough root formation.



In bigger plants hard, curly green leaves indicates too much vegative growth (at the expense of fruit) and a bit more heat is recommended - I don't know if this applies to your young plants though.

Yes there is 4 leaf stalks, maybe i should stop watering them as much as you say.

Hi Daniel, I've seen this 'darkening' on my plants if the temperature has dipped a bit. It doesn't seem to worry them as long as they are growing strongly anyway. I would agree with the others, and cut down on the watering - too damp + too cold = trouble!
