Brussel sprouts - Peer Gynt

I am sure I have read lots about this variety of sprout on and off but can't find anything at the moment. I came across a packet of seed a few days ago and I am sure I have read that they are no longer available (or is my leaky brain mis-remembering?)

Should I buy said packet? (it won't have gone anywhere as it is buried at the back of a little old shop where hardly anyone goes)

Are they nice sprouts?

I've never grown that variety Shirley, but everything Google comes up with mentions that they're 'early' - peak time for harvesting is October/Novemeber, and that they're 'compact' plants, which I guess is a good thing if you're pressed for space. Didn't find any mention of flavour, except that the main effect on sprout's flavour comes from the cooking... Guess if they're ready in October that gives you plenty of boiling time before Christmas...

LOL, I have ordered some Trafalgar from T&M as they claim everyone will love them and come back for more! (hmm, I will reserve judgement).

Just wondered on the Peer Gynt as I am sure I have read about people being upset at not being able to get them any more.

Peer Gynt aren't available as the company who maintained the stocks decided not to do it anymore. Don't know why as a lot of people liked them. I've grown Trafalgar and wasn't overly impressed, my favourite so far is Brigitte, but I think only Sutton's sell them. They're a lovely mixture of sweet and nutty and even my kids commented on how nice they were.

Peer Gynt is a cracking sprout I would grab that packet PDQ only problem is going to be when you run out of seed you will be gutted when you cant find another sprout to hold a candle to it.

On that recommendation PaulW I shall go buy them tomorrow. Do I take it you would like a few if there are many in the packet?

Mine, IIRC, were a bit dwarf-ish and gave quite small, very tight sprouts that were lovely to eat. Not the most productive I have grown but there again I just sowed them, forgot about them, ate them

I'd buy the packet!!!!

I think it is F1 Seahorse - might have a go at keeping seed though.

That bad?!?!?! Maybe even the kids will try them then (if there are any left); don't have a problem with cabbage root fly, pigeons or wabbits here)

Well, I think that means I will go buy them then - I thought I had read lots of good comments. I will report back on how many packets I can find and will offer some on the seed swap (depending on pack contents)

Shirl, just my tuppence worth, my neighbour on my new lottie was complaining that he had the last of these (Peer Gynt) for this year & he would have to change to , I think he said Maximus, but have been wrong before. He reckons they are a marvellous, tight, tasty sprout. (didn't offer me any though)

Thats one of the ones I'm trying this year....so I hope your neighbour's right!

Well, here I am back again. I got a couple of packets of Peer Gynt - sow by 2007 but hopefully that won't matter much with them being brassicas. No Icarus but there were some Bedford Filibasket (or however they go) which I could go back for. All seeds were out of date (belonged to someone who had gone out of business) and 'help yourself and put some money in the charity pot'

I am now offering a few seeds to those that fancy giving them a try. Sorry, gonna be a bit mean here and say 5 seeds to the first 7 peeps to PM - that is one of the packets gone.

Off to put some on damp paper to check viability.
