onions have been in since march growth looks heathly, but when weeding yesterday find that many of the bulbs were really soft, had doubts when planted do they need to be pulled up and started again with new bulbs.

Once onion sets have started to establish their own roots the storage receptacle which is the 'set' is not needed anymore and will go soft and gradually rot away! The onion will grow from the middle and make it's own bulb as it grows!
