  • Broad Bean question

Hi, never grown broad beans before. I plan on growing some in a large barrel. Should a sow the seed direct or in pots in greenhouse first? The seeds I have are The Sutton (dwarf). Will they need any support at all?

It's warm enough now to sow them direct.

I've sown some outdoors today and about a fortnight ago. The ones from a fortnight ago are now up!

The barrel that I will be using is 24" in diameter, how many should I put in there?

I've spaced mine 6-8inches apart, so i guess you could get about 10 in?
            Anyone agree?

Sow them round the circumference 8"apart and then put some in the middle the same spacing, i did this last year and got quit a few in but cant remember the exact number.
                good luck.

                    And another broad bean question.

Mine have had black and white flowers for weeks, and now the flowers on the lower part of the plant have withered, and just look black and sort of burnt or dried out. Is that what is supposed to happen and will I have beans soon?

Oleander if they (the flowers) were fertilised/pollenated then yes, the flowers will start to fall off and you'll then see small pods behind them
