Brassicas in raised beds.

I have metre square Link -a -bord beds filled with compost/topsoil mix.

I know brassicas like firm soil and the soil in the beds is fairly friable.

Do you reckon cabbages will be OK in the beds?

i suppose I could always pack it down quite firmly..

Hampsterqueen, is the Link-a-bord on grass/soil or hardstanding? I grew my minipop sweetcorn in my link a bord last year.
They were over 5' high at the end and very firm but then mine was placed on part of the lawn that had been lightly forked over.
If it is hardstanding then I would have thought it wasn't deep enough, even if it is firmed, but somebody else may have other ideas

They are on soil. I've experimented with treading the beds down a little and then planting. If I can keep the cats and foxes off them I'll let you know how it went!

When you put brassicas in it is usual to 'Heel them in' anyway!
