  • Very quick question re propagators and heat

If I have some seeds that say they need, for example, 20 to 25 degrees to germinate. Do I need a heated propagator to keep the heat constant, or would my conservatory which heats up during the day but goes colder at night be alright?

About to go shopping so need to know! Thanks

Don't know, but I'd put them in the heated prop anyway.

    What are they?

i'm no expert but i keep things that need a bit more heat to germinate in the heated prop constantly, i think the drop in temperature at night could cause problems with germination but i suppose it depends how cold your conservatory gets at night

Thanks. I suppose I could keep it in the conservatory during the day and bring the tray in to the dining room table overnight as it's warmer inside. Wonder if that would work.

Um things like tomatoes, onions, various peppers and I can't remember the rest as they're all outside!

If you've got a heated prop, use it. If you haven't, put them somewhere that has a constant warm temp. You can take them into the conservatory during the day if you so wish, but put them back somewhere at night. You don't have to, you will still probably get germination if you leave them in there all the time. But it wouldn't be worth the risk to me.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Thanks all! I shall go and have a look at prices but I have a feeling they'll be too expensive for now, especially for the number of seeds I want to put in it!

i'm on the tightest veg growing budget ever and i use an unheated windowsill propagator that i manage carefully. i move it into sunlight for the day and make sure it never dries out too much. in the evening i bring it in and keep it warm so it heats up quickly again in the morning.. and so on.
so far i have germinated aubergines, tomatoes, sweet peppers, capsicums, coriander, basil and chili's all no worries and in good time.
heated propagators work really well, but i'm growing to save money - not spend it!

Sorry thought you'd got a heated prop, not that you were gonna buy one. Most of the above will germinate easily on a warm window, etc. Peppers might be slower.
