sweetcorn

hi everyone!

just wondering if anyone could tell me how long it generally takes for sweetcorn to germinate? am getting impatient, has been well over 3 weeks and no sign of any action. any clues?

I sowed 12, 3 germinated in ten days, still waiting on the rest. Now day 15.

I'm no expert but 3 wks seems a long time. I've just checked the sow date on mine (06/04) and they all germinated about a week ago. Perhaps they have been too cold?

Perhaps also it could be the variety - I've got double standard for the garden (were rubbish last year),conquerer for the allotment and strawberry popcorn for a friend. The seedlings for double standard are twice as big as the conquerer despite being planted at the same time and took a day or so less to germinate.

Good luck, if all else fails plants some more on a nice hot windowsill!

thanks! they're in the nursery which is always between 16-20 degrees at the mo, dos it need to be hotter do you think? (obv i will find another spot for them, and not cook the babies) x x x

Always a good plan NOT to cook your children Unless they are 15, in which case I would suggest boiling in oil

I've had problems with sweetcorn in the past not germinating, 3 weeks is too long.
Go and have a careful rootle around in a couple and see if the seed has gone all mouldy, they don't like being wet.
After that disastrous year where I had 4 out of 30 germinate, I now pre-germinate them on kitchen paper and put them in pots when they start shooting.

I've got some sweetcorn seeds - super sweet something or rather, and the packet says they need 20 - 30deg C to germinate!! Maybe yours need a bit more heat...

Mine are on the window cill, have come up in about 10 days and are now about 6cms tall and looking very strong. Could you have over watered?

yup, think so, they looked a bit manky when i dug them up. i now have some on kitchen towel in the airing cupboard, do u think this might be more successful? thanks for the help! x

Do you give them a soak over night before potting up?(I do mine into loo rolls)I have found in the past this helps with germination.Just put mine to soak tonight as grandson coming to sow them after school tomorrow.

if mine are anything to go by (about half of them have gone mouldy after I checked under the soil) then perhaps you overwatered
whether mine or yours will still grow is another question
i don't plan on watering my mouldy ones any further so we'll see

I put mine in paper pots (after an overnight soak), in the heated propagator on Sunday. They were up last night (that's 2 days).

Mine took about a week or two to pop their heads up.

I find it is very easy to overwater peas, beans and sweetcorn. What I tend to do, with good results, is to plant in multi purpose as it comes from the bag and not to water untill I see some growth. I find that there is enough moisture in the compost without putting any water on at all.
