  • Planting out sweetcorn?

    Hi All

As it is nearly May and the weather seems to be ok in the S.E, what are peoples opinions of planting out the sweetcorn?

Just potted mine up yesterday after chitting. Hopefully by the time they are a decent size I won't have to worry about frost!

I would have thought that it is far too early even in the South. I would get them covered with a cloche to protect against frosts or even cold nights.

It's been unseasonally warm so I hope I haven't been lulled into a false sense of security but a tray of mine are braving it outside tonight. I like to 'push the envelope' with sweetcorn and most years I've been successful getting decent cobs when neighbours who obey the rules have not - think of it as an adventure!

Mine are currently being hardened off but coming indoors at night.

I have been eyeing the local hawthorns and although the buds are getting fat they are not in flower quite yet - soon though! - and then all my tender stuff will start going out (at least, anything I can resow if I get caught out! there are a few things that will be kept back a bit longer!)

Okay, you've all convinced me, I'll plant mine tomorrow. I was being a good girl and waiting, but it seems like there's no time like the present.

Mine? Mine are still in seed form! Hahaha. I had no room to start them earlier and coddle them.

                          Oh, lol.
Mine are about 2" tall at the moment.
I don't think it is too late to sow, but I wouldn't leave it much longer. Protect the seedlings if they are still at risk of frost.

Mine are mostly about 5" to 6" tall (there are a couple of late-starters)

It is by no means too late to sow more. I plan a second sowing before the end of the month and a third sowing in mid May. If you are up north and have a shorter growing season you might want to get your finger out though and sow fairly soon?
